Household income generating programs

Tzu Chi actively creates diverse income streams for villagers, currently implementing three projects – sewing workshops, Loving Heart kitchens, and housing repairs.

After the first batch of sewing class graduates in 2023, Tzu Chi sought suitable locations to continue guiding employment. Eventually, a homeowner willing to support women's employment offered their brick house. This marked the initiation of the first sewing workshop, producing items from small cloth bags to student uniforms. Women received their first wages, expressing overwhelming joy. Tzu Chi has now established three sewing workshops.

Tzu Chi volunteers noticed many village women having idle time after household chores. To address this, impoverished women were recruited to cook lunch at the community center. The meals were then delivered to the International Buddhist Association's free clinic, benefiting impoverished patients and including a gift of one egg per person for nutritional support. Women participating in the "Loving Heart Kitchen" willingly contributed, proving dedicated and not only benefiting patients but also earning a modest income for their families.

During the monsoon season in Nepal, many simple thatched houses and mud-wall homes cannot withstand the onslaught of wind and rain. Some leak, and others collapse, with snakes and insects sometimes entering. Villagers are forced to seek shelter under neighboring overhangs or sleep outdoors. Upon receiving reports, Tzu Chi conducts surveys and initiates a cash-for-work program, recruiting villagers to repair houses or construct simple homes, promoting a spirit of "helping each other within the community."
